Logos have been around for a really long time, even before people started calling them "logos." In ancient times, people used symbols to represent their families, tribes, or businesses. These symbols were like early versions of logos.

As trade and commerce grew, merchants and craftspeople started using special marks to show who made a product. These marks were like signatures or stamps that helped people recognize the quality and source of the goods. This was especially important when many people couldn't read or write.

In the Middle Ages, guilds (groups of skilled workers) used emblems to represent their trades. These emblems often featured tools or products related to their craft, like a hammer for blacksmiths or scissors for tailors.

The industrial revolution in the late 1800s brought big changes to the world of logos. As companies grew larger and started advertising more, they needed eye-catching symbols to make their products stand out. Some early famous logos from this time include the Coca-Cola script and the Prudential Rock.

In the 20th century, the rise of mass media and international trade made logos even more important. Companies hired designers to create simple, memorable logos that could work across different cultures and languages. Some iconic logos from this era include the Nike swoosh, the McDonald's golden arches, and the Apple apple.

🤔 Interesting Fact

Did you know that the famous Nike swoosh logo was designed by a college student named Carolyn Davidson back in 1971? And guess how much Nike's co-founder Phil Knight paid her for it? Only $35!

At the time, Carolyn was a graphic design student at Portland State University. Phil Knight, who was teaching accounting there, overheard her saying that she couldn't afford oil paints for her classes. He offered to pay her $2 per hour to do some freelance design work for his new shoe company, Blue Ribbon Sports (which later became Nike).

Carolyn came up with the swoosh design after Phil Knight told her he wanted a logo that suggested movement. She presented him with a few options, and he chose the swoosh because he thought it looked like a wing and could represent the speed and grace of a runner.

The funny thing is, Phil Knight wasn't totally convinced at first. He reportedly told Carolyn, "I don't love it, but it will grow on me." Little did he know that the simple swoosh would become one of the most recognizable and valuable logos in the world.

In 1983, Knight invited Carolyn to a company lunch, where he surprised her with a gold ring in the shape of the swoosh and an envelope filled with Nike stock. The stock was worth around $150 at the time, but it would be worth much, much more today!

Carolyn's story is a great reminder that sometimes the simplest ideas can have the biggest impact. It also shows how a little bit of creativity and hard work can lead to amazing things. Who knows, maybe you'll design the next famous logo someday!
