📚 History Lesson

Roblox was founded by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004, initially under the name DynaBlocks. The following year, the company changed its name to Roblox, and on September 1, 2006, the platform officially launched.

In March 2007, Roblox introduced safe chat, limiting communication abilities for users under 13, and in August, they released a premium membership service called "Builders Club," later rebranded as Roblox Premium in 2019. The company held its first annual Hack Week in December 2011, where developers work on innovative ideas to present to the company.

Roblox expanded its platform to iOS in December 2012 and introduced the Developer Exchange program in October 2013, allowing developers to exchange Robux earned from their games into real-world currencies. The platform further expanded to Android in July 2014 and Xbox One in November 2015, with a selection of games chosen by Roblox staff.

In April 2016, Roblox launched Roblox VR for Oculus Rift, offering more than ten million games in 3D. The safe chat feature was replaced by a whitelist and blacklist system around the same time. The company also launched a standalone launcher for Windows 10 in June 2016.

Throughout 2017, Roblox updated its server technology to address frequent outages and closed its official forums. In November 2018, the ability to play as a "guest" without an account was removed entirely.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Roblox introduced "Party Place" in July 2020, an online hangout feature. The company was granted permission to release in China in December 2020 but shut down its Chinese servers a year later due to plans to create a version compliant with Chinese internet censorship laws.

Roblox experienced its longest downtime of three days in October 2021. In September 2022, the company announced an age rating system to allow moderate portrayals of violence in games for players aged 13 and over, aiming to appeal to a young adult audience.

The platform was released as a public beta for the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro in July 2023, garnering over one million downloads within five days. In September 2023, Roblox announced its upcoming availability on PlayStation and acquired Speechly, an AI voice chat moderation startup.

In March 2024, Roblox introduced automatic avatar customization and a texture generator to accelerate 3D content creation on the platform.

🤔 Interesting Fact

The Hunt, formerly known as Egg Hunts and originally called Eggstravaganzas and Egg Drops, is a series of special events in which players must find eggs scattered across one or more Roblox games. Each egg is unique and requires a different method to obtain. Egg Hunts were first introduced in April 2008 and were discontinued in April 2020, but made a comeback in March 2024.

Some eggs, particularly the hardest ones to find, would become limited items and typically sell for around 200 to 1,500 Robux, with the rarest eggs selling for over 500,000 Robux (these eggs are extremely rare, with fewer than 200 available in the Avatar Shop). Egg Hunts or Egg Drops were not featured in 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2011, and in 2021, the Egg Hunt was replaced by the Metaverse Champions event.

During the Metaverse Champions event, an egg called the Tiny Egg of Nonexistence was included as a troll by Telamon, referencing the Eggstravaganza 2008. This egg was the last one released by Roblox until the Infinite Egg and the Vault Raider Jetpack, which were introduced nearly three years later during The Hunt: First Edition. In the main hub game for Metaverse Champions, a badge with the description "goodbye." can be found, confirming that no future official Egg Hunt events would be held.

The Hunt: First Edition:
On March 22, a rocket arrived in the event hub, carrying The Infinite Egg. Initially, players needed to collect 100 badges to claim the egg, but this requirement was later reduced to 95 due to some experiences being unavailable in certain regions. Additionally, the Vault Raider Jetpack, an exclusive gift card item, was available only during The Hunt event.
